| EPEAT is a straightforward online resource which measures the environmental friendliness of electronic products such as; desktops, laptops and monitors. There is a growing demand for EPEAT and electronic manufactures can rely on EPEAT for clear, consistent results to help meet strategic targets. There are over 500 product manufactures which are registered and benefit from EPEAT. ( Apple. Toshiba, Hewlett Packer, Dell) The benefits of using EPEAT include reducing pollution, energy use, toxic waste, increasing environmental awareness and gaining market access. | REACH is a European regulation which monitors the safety and use of chemicals to eliminate harming the environment and health of humans. Therefore companies need to be aware of the impacts from the chemicals they may be using. The goal of REACH is to increase the protection of human health and of our environment through early identification. In addition, REACH strives to enhance the innovation and competitiveness of EU chemicals. | Responsible Recycling also known as R2, is a set of guidelines for recyclers. Recyclers follow the R2 practices regarding disassembling or reclaiming used electronics for either recycling purposes or for refurbishment. A list of practices can be found on the R2 website, note that they are not obligatory but on a voluntary basis. | ||
Would you predict there being an increased demand for engineered resins with “post-consumer” content in the consumer electronics sector? If so, what is the key driver for consideration?
“Yes! The primary driver for recycled content is customers. Customers are becoming increasingly aware of the environment and are beginning to base purchases on companies and products that demonstrate responsible environmental practices. Recycled content is an easy environmental attribute for customers to understand. Most people can intuitively see the benefit of RC, where things like carbon footprint are more difficult concepts to measure and communicate to a customer. A secondary driver is legislation and certification – legislation that forces governments or companies to buy GREEN products and certifications which rank and measure companies on environmental criteria (i.e. EPEAT). Mandatory legislation grows every year, and certification will become increasingly important way for customers to understand which products provide the most environmental benefit.”Dean Miller, WW Supplies Recycling Program Manager, Hewlett Packard “It is anticipated that the demand will continue to increase. There are two main drivers for this increased demand. The first is increased customer requirements for the use of “post consumer” content and the second primary driver is the further development of regulatory or quasi-regulatory requirements for the use of “post consumer” content in consumer electronics especially within governmental and educational lines of business” John Gagel, Manager Sustainable Practices, Lexmark International Inc. What does “Sustainability” mean for you with consideration to your role and responsibility? “Sustainability means developing recycling and recycled content processes for HP that uses an increasingly smaller amount of the earth’s natural resources. Moving towards an end goal of equilibrium where our products use no more resources than are returned at end-of-life. Sustainability also means that developing products and processes which allow the company to remain profitable and solvent.” Dean Miller, WW Supplies Recycling Program Manager, Hewlett Packard. “Sustainability has really become a study of operational efficiency focused on improving the sustainable design of the product including its operational features and functions. This requires a full life cycle focus on the footprint of the product. Sustainability is also a primary focus for Lexmark’s operational footprint for our facilities worldwide with a goal of driving down the use water, energy, generation of waste and greenhouse gases” John Gagel, Manager Sustainable Practices, Lexmark International Inc.
